Josh Little - President, Maestro eLearning
Josh Little
President
This all started when I was a sales training manager at a large medical device company. I was tasked with building a world class training program. When I looked around, I only saw some outdated training binders and CD’s. I knew that a robust eLearning program was necessary component of my program, which was to train sales representatives globally on a very technical piece of medical equipment, a surgical navigation system. Since it was impossible to fly everyone in to corporate the day they started, I needed a system that would help someone who sold copiers yesterday to have an intelligent conversation with one of the world’s finest neurosurgeons as soon as possible. While classroom training was essential, I was only able to hold periodic sessions which meant that in the front row I had someone who had been on the job for two months sitting next to some who had been on for two days. I needed a system that could bring everyone to the same level of understanding before they came to the classroom. That way we could spend our time on high impact activities like hands on lab work, sales scenarios, and role playing….not a powerpoint festival. I also had difficulty getting the most current information, documents, and tools in the hands of my learners, as well as keeping them apprised of upcoming events and details. Most training managers, like I was, try to tackle these tasks through endless emails, voicemails, and spreadsheets to keep things straight. I also had major concerns over documenting that my representatives were able to demonstrate competency to do their job. I didn’t have the systems. I knew that all of these problems could be solved by creating an online education system that my reps could go to for all of their education and training needs. They could go there to take any one of a library of courses in the curriculum they had been assigned, which were followed by an assessment that was tracked by the system. They could then print their certificate and transcript for documentation as well as access journal articles, technical bullitens, powerpoints, white papers, and videos all from the same location. They could even find out when upcoming classroom training events and webinars were scheduled and add them to their outlook calendar or enroll one of our customers. This was my dream.

The search

So I went looking for this dream. I had a budget and I started by asking training managers at sister divisions of my own company what they were doing. I looked at the industry and gathered the names of companies who developed eLearning programs for the medical industry. I then researched some big name companies who had reputations outside of the industry. I started interviewing them one by one. I quickly noticed something…they didn’t understand my business, not just my business, the pains of corporate training. When I would ask if their system had a calendar function, they would ask why I needed it. Because they didn’t understand my business, they also didn’t understand how to help me. Many of them wanted to sell me software that would allow me to create my own courses, which at the time sounded like a good idea, but in retrospect there was no way I could have spent 50-100 hours writing and desiging a course on top of working 70 plus hours a week. At that rate, I could have probably turned out 1 course a year. The reality is that in my learning map, I needed to create at least 45 courses. I looked at offshore organizations to save money, but when I reviewed the product, it was so terrible, that I knew learning wouldn’t occur. Beyond that, when I asked about integrating multimedia content, I was told that I could work with another group for those aspects. So here I was, working 70+ hours per week, running over 40 live training courses per year all around the world, shipping binders and CD’s, mindlessly sending emails and voicemails to communicate, coach, and inform while keeping spreadsheets updated with who was flying in for what training. But, I had this dream.

I didn’t spend a dollar of my budget. I looked at over 30 reputable eLearning companies, I never implemented a solution. I knew that spending a dollar of that budget would be wasted because the system would only have a small percentage of the curriculum needed, or it would be so terrible that learning wouldn’t actually occur. I knew this from being a victim of terrible eLearning experiences. Ultimately, I knew the program wouldn’t be successful. These are the same reasons many of the eLearning programs installed in corporations today aren’t used. They weren’t designed to work.

So I decided that since I had this really clear vision of what a great eLearning program looked like, I would build a company around that vision, Maestro. I’ve hired a group of talented people who have all shared in the same experiences and vision as mine. I’ve built the company that I wished existed. We’re now helping companies avoid the problems I had through building world class eLearning programs. The primary reason we’re able to do that is because of our experience. This is why we can say we’ve been in your shoes.

We know that some of the best learning you ever witnessed was in elementary school when the concepts were clear and you got a chance to play with things and demonstrate your knowledge. Somewhere along the educational chain through high school and college, we have become disoriented with what good learning looks like.

In today’s world people are bombarded with information at every turn. Just providing good information is no longer enough. Traditional forms of eLearning are simply information with an occasional picture. Research shows that retention rates of traditional of this kind of learning are extremely low. The latest research on multimedia learning theory suggests that learners retain much more through visuals, stories, scenarios, and activities. When we are concepting a program, we think less about getting all of the information across, and more about how to make an impact.

For example, we could go on and on about how we think, but since we know that you learn better through stories and visual cues, we’ll relate the following:

Have you ever looked at your full refrigerator and said "There’s nothing to eat." What if a master chef came into your house. Do you think this chef could assemble a meal from the ingredients in your refrigerator and cupboards? Do you think a master chef could most likely make a masterpiece from the items you already had in your home? If not, the master chef would know exactly what to buy from the store to complete the masterpiece. We approach building a program for a customer just as the master chef would approach making a meal in your home. Many of our customers already have great ingredients sitting on the shelf. By simply applying our revolutionary thinking, we could deliver a masterpiece.

We’re interested in a long term partnership. For this reason, we approach our work differently. We want to understand your program almost as well as you do. We invest heavily in getting to know our customers so that we can work for you with minimal supervision. Because we understand that a good training program is a living/breathing thing and must be kept current, we structure our business relationship to support ongoing development.
